Evaluation
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Our Short film, ‘Curiosity’ could be considered a film that fits the horror genre, but also has elements of mystery/thriller. We tried to base our film opening on similar films such as ‘Black Christmas’ which we watched in class, after viewing this film our group eventually decided to make a film rooted to the horror genre. The film opening incorporates features of its genre as throughout there is a feeling of mystery and suspense leading up to the end where the character is killed.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
In our film we created a stereotypical horror character who goes investigating the source of something instead of staying away, this also leads to his untimely death as is seen in many other horror films. The 'Good' character is clearly shown as Bob is seen to be doing innocent things such as cleaning and walking around the school whereas the 'Evil' character is shown by the figure following him and almost stalking him around the school leading up to Bobs untimely death.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
When researching film distributors we found that ‘Lionsgate’ would be a good choice of distributor as they have experience with horror films in the past such as the ‘Saw’ Series and ‘The Last Exorcism’. Based on their past experience it seems that they would be perfect for distributing our film as it fits into the genre of some of their other projects and most of these have done well at the box office.
Who would be the audience for your media product
Based on other films of the same genre we decided that the film would appeal to people aged 15+ with a more specific audience being between the ages of 15 and 20. Our film would appeal to this age group because some of the themes may not be suitable for younger audiences however it would not contain the more brutal and gore scenes that films such as ‘Saw’ contain.
How did you attract/address your audience?
We addressed our audience mainly by the sense of mystery behind the masked figure and also the danger that the caretaker was in by being alone in the school with this supernatural being, we also incorporated a sense of mystery and suspense by the use of music and the overall feel of the film.

What have your learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
During the planning and early stages of our product we were taught about rules such as the 180 degree rule, shot reverse shot and continuity editing techniques. To do the actual filming we used DV tape camcorders and during the editing process we used IMacs and a piece of software called IMovie in order to edit our clips together and also add effects and music to them.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
When we first recorded our preliminary task and we just had the raw footage i had no idea what to do with it or how we could even add it all together to make a continuous film, but through the various weeks of lessons we learnt about editing and how to use imovie in order to put our film together and we made our preliminary task into our first piece of media based work. I then took this experience and put it to use in order to film and edit our short film and i feel that doing the preliminary task gave me the confidence and know how to make the finishing product of our short film a success.
